Kinetic Sculpture “The Sky’s the Limit” by Michael Hayden

Having lived in Chicago previously, and having flown on United numerous times, I’m familiar with the ‘tunnel’ connecting United’s C Concourse to the A and B concourses in Terminal 1. I remember reading about certain design elements, like the scalloped walls, which were built to ‘fool’ claustrophobics; but I never knew the whole thing was not only designed by an artist, or that it was classed a ‘kinetic sculpture’, or that it had a name.

From Wikipedia:

“The tunnel between Concourse B and C in Terminal 1 at Chicago’s O’Hare Airport – Operated by United Airlines. The tunnel features a 744 foot long kinetic neon sculpture titled, ‘The Sky’s the Limit’, by Michael Hayden.”

Hotel Indigo Chicago-Vernon Hills

I’ve never stayed at a Hotel Indigo before; I don’t know much about them, but they are a member of Priority Club, which puts them in the sane family as Holiday Inn and Crowne Plaza, if I remember correctly.

The accomodations weren’t bad at all, save for the fact that the air conditioner was set to 62 degrees when I walked in. 24 hours later, it had warmed all the way up to 70; fine for most, but a bit cool for my Phoenix blood.

The hotel is obviously about style and design, to the point where there were some obvious places where function took a back seat to form- the bathroom sink and shower come to mind (see photos below).

They had a small, relatively open bar in the lobby called PHI; when I asked about that and their “Phitness Center”, I was told that their design was inspired by Leonardo DaVinci… I don’t know if it’s true, but it’s a good story. Don’t know if that alone would make me stay there again, as opposed to any other hotel (PHI is apparently part of a fibonacci sequence, though I don’t know how, and I haven’t sat down to try and figure it out.

Drinks were not terribly overpriced at the bar. No complimentary breakfast that I noticed, continental or otherwise, but they do have some simple Starbuck’s drinks that they make right there.

If you want to find a hotel that is not the cookie-cutter plain hotel room, and don’t mind the lack of freebies, then you may want to see if there is a Hotel Indigo around the next time you travel.

Chicago From The Sears Tower at Night

Going through some old photos, I came across this one, taken in July 2006 on a day out in Chicago with friends.
For what I was working with- a point-and-shoot, the need for a long exposure, and freehand (no tripod), I think it turned out pretty well.
Debating whether or not I’ll check out “The Ledge” at the Sears Tower (sorry, but it will never be Willis Tower to me).
Would you wan to stand on a piece of glass 1,353 feet above street level? http://www.theskydeck.com/theledge.asp

Photos of Air Force One- Back In Phoenix

So, Air Force One was back in town this weekend.  Are you a photographer in any capacity- pro, hobbyist, enthusiast, other?  Do you like planes?  Did you get a chance to get out to try and get a picture of one of the arrivals or departures?  If not, you’ll have one more chance Monday, after the President speaks to the VFW convention on Phoenix, the President will be leaving the Valley of the Sun to head back home to Washington, D.C.

‘When’ in anybody’s guess; the FAA TFR (Temporary Flight Restriction) around PHX Sky Harbor goes through 1:00 PM, but the President hs been running early this entire trip.  So, if you are looking to get a shot of the departure, I’d recommend getting out there early.  Of course, this is already Obama’s third visit to Phoenix in six months, so chances are, if you don’t catch Air Force One this time, odds are there will be another; to paraphrase a Phoenix police officer assigned to keep an eye on my fellow photographers and me, “I think he [Obama] just likes rubbing McCain’s face in it.”

Anyway, below are some highlights of my photos from Sunday’s departure for the First Family’s day trip to the Grand Canyon. The complete set can be found here.  Please click on any of the images below for a larger size of the image.

All of my photos from both Air Force One visits to Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport that I’ve been able to photograph can be found here.

For additional photos from some other very talented and passionate photographers, you may want to check out the Arizona Aviation Photographers (AzAP) website.

Enjoy!

Before the Presidential motorcade even arrived at the airport, the North side of the airport was completely closed down to all air traffic. All takeoffs and departures were on the South runways only. With the two South runways relatively close together, they could only launch or land one plane at a time; they had to alternate- one landing, one takeoff. As you can imagine, this led to some delays; at one point, I counted twelve planes lined up on the taxiway waiting to take off.
