Thank you so much for sharing such a personal story, and sharing that bit of personal history. Your story truly put a unique perspective on the events on that day, and painted quite the picture.

I'm going to have to look back at some of my photos and video from my last trip there and see if I can find the homes you mentioned.

These are very beautiful pictures. Proper respect to those that gave (and are currently giving) to protect our freedoms.

When you are on Ford Island at the boarding point of the Missouri, there are old, boarded-up homes (they would be on the left of the guns on the Battleship Missouri, but are shrouded by trees) or if you are at the Oklahoma Memorial and look beyond it, you will see them. These were enlisted mens family housing and they were there during the bombing.

My mom was 7 years old and lived in one of those homes at the time-Less than a quarter mile from the Arizona. The Maryland and the Oklahoma were in their backyard. She and my grandmother huddled behind an overstuffed chair through the whole bombing.

Afterward, women and children and wounded were evacuated to the same place on Ford Island. There was no fresh water. Apparently, the Arizona lay on the water lines to Ford Island.

When I was a kid, my mom used to get physically ill from the smell of transmission fluid, bad meat cooking and natural gas. Hold over from memories.

When Tora Tora Tora came on TV, we sat and watched it. My mom would have been in her late 30's. She sat on the couch and cried like a baby.

My grandparents and my mom have long since passed away, but that place has special meaning to me and to many other that lived in those homes.

In past times civilians stepped up making sacrifices of material goods and provided support to those that served.

In today's conflicts, we should not forget the past... so that we will not be doomed to repeat it, but neither should we ignore or turn a blind eye to the present. Think about those sacrifices of the past and act accordingly.
